The client brief was to create a design that reflected the simple vernacular nature of the architecture, in order to look like a part of the original building rather than a recent addition. This was achieved with a simple unpretentious design with oak shelves rather than wall cabinets and incorporating into the kitchen design heavy section English oak timbers that harmonized perfectly with the buildings existing structural timbers. The use of heavy hand forged ironmongery also added to the vernacular period feel of the design. The entire kitchen was handmade, and of coarse this is the only way to authentically pay homage to such a fine period building. Period buildings often have small windows and consequently suffer from a lack of natural daylight. Although this building had reasonable sized windows, the natural daylight was boosted enormously by incorporating a limestone floor, and by the use of Carrara marble as the worktop. Approximately 60% of all ambient light in a kitchen is reflected light from horizontal surfaces, so it makes sense to keep it light. When the client visited my showroom, she was particularly impressed with a hanging rack above my Aga and a shelf suspended on old chains. So I collated both concepts together, and designed a hanging rack supporting a sculpture of a dove. Hanging racks are both useful and aesthetically pleasing. Great for hanging Aga toasters, colanders, spatulas, pans and even drying clothes. They're often used over islands, they add another dimension to the kitchen and make use of unused space. This particular hanging rack was suspended on heavy duty chain, which was aged over a period of time to create an authentic medieval effect. Incorporating original handmade wooden hinges along with a grape vine hand carved out of the solid. Made entirely by hand, this dresser forms part of a bespoke farmhouse unfitted kitchen situated in the Peak District National Park in Cheshire, but would sit equally well in a contemporary setting. Often referred to as the fairy tale dresser, it is completely free of straight lines. This highly complex design is on a human scale and feels extremely natural, perhaps because straight lines do not exist in nature. This is a highly specialized and original piece of work without historical precedent and exemplifies the concept of thinking outside of the box. The video explains the reasoning behind this type of design, and how people unwittingly accept square linear designs as being the norm, when in actual fact they're incongruous to the laws of nature. Square lines do not exist in nature, they are an invention of man to aid and facilitate mass production techniques and to boost profitability. Radical designs often cause controversy because they run counter to the known paradigm, and when something is difficult to understand or unusual, it is often criticised and ridiculed. However the laws of nature are immutable and eternal and when natural movement is incorporated into designs they encapsulate a humanity and grace so lacking in the more utilitarian square designs. Bespoke handmade kitchen design is no exception to this rule, although the making process is considerably more difficult and ultimately more expensive to produce. Making the work entirely by hand is also another major factor in the overall aesthetic. When something is made by hand, it is a fusion of the intellect and raw physical power resulting in far more beautiful work on a more human scale, compared to the sanitized machine equivalent. Attention to detail is another important factor in the design and making of beautiful handmade kitchens. Handmade wooden hinges, high relief wood carvings carved out of the solid, wood shaped and planed by hand and the sourcing of highly figured hardwoods like figured sycamore and pippy oak all add to the overall aesthetic value of the work. Symmetry and straight lines are not a precursor to design, they simply facilitate mass production techniques and improve margins. A much simpler design was adopted relying for its beauty and impact on characterful wood and simple lines but still maintaining excellent workmanship and attention to detail. Whilst the overall concept is subtle and understated a design statement is made with the hand carved sculptural posts. The hinges and handles are hand forged by a blacksmith giving a truly authentic timeless feel to this handmade kitchen. This kitchen was situated in a small awkward space something carved wood design specialize in. This kitchen was situated in a 16th century farm house although it would be just as effective in a more contemporary setting. Bespoke kitchens can be designed to suit the period of the property eg medieval, 16th century, Georgian, Victorian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco etc, or more importantly the individual clients idiosyncratic personal tastes. Built like a tank and made to last a lifetime, a rare design concept in the 21st century and a truly sound investment.
